    Growing up, I experienced the highs and lows of perfectionism. The constant pressure to meet unrealistic standards led to a cycle of stress and self-doubt. It wasn't until I discovered Yoga Philosophy that I found a path to break free from this suffocating mindset.

    What is Perfectionism?

    Perfectionism is a relentless pursuit of flawlessness and the setting of exceedingly high standards for oneself, often accompanied by critical self-evaluations. It involves the need for control over every aspect of life, striving for an unattainable level of performance. This constant need for control can lead to heightened stress and anxiety, as well as a persistent fear of failure. Research has shown that perfectionists are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem (Allen & Wang, 2014).

    The fear of failure is another significant aspect of perfectionism. Individuals who struggle with perfectionism often have an intense fear of making mistakes or falling short of their own or others' expectations. This fear can be paralyzing, preventing individuals from taking risks or trying new things due to the overwhelming dread of not meeting their own impossibly high standards.

The constant pressure to achieve unattainable standards can lead to chronic stress and anxiety. Moreover, the link between perfectionism and anxiety has been well-documented in scientific literature (Burgess & Dibartolo, 2016).

    Furthermore, the quest for perfection often results in missed opportunities. The fear of not being able to meet one's own unrealistic standards may lead individuals to avoid taking risks or trying new experiences, ultimately limiting personal growth and development. Research suggests that perfectionism can have a negative effect on all domains of an individual’s life and is found amongst all age groups, socio-economic classifications, and ethnicities (Burgess & Dibartolo, 2016). The rates of perfectionism are on the rise; a meta-analysis found that it has increased by 32% in recent years (Curran and Hill (2019)).

    Perfectionism's detrimental impact on mental health cannot be understated. It has been linked with depression and suicidal ideation due to the overwhelming pressure individuals place on themselves (Asseraf & Vaillancourt, 2015). Additionally, studies have demonstrated that anxiety sensitivity is a predictor for pathology both as a primary and secondary diagnosis among those struggling with perfectionistic tendencies (Diaz, 2018).
